The Aqua mirror is a shatterproof plastic mirror specifically designed for use as a Learn to Swim Aid in the water. It's user friendly and has multiple applications. Encouraging a child to be comfortable with placing their face in the water can be a major challenge at times. The mirror is designed to help children associate putting their face into the water to blow bubbles as a fun activity. Children love to look at themselves in mirrors. Over time their confidence grows and they become more comfortable with automatically placing their face into the water which is needed to be able to teach the strokes correctly.
Bubbles and Submersion
When working with a small children wary of putting the face into the water begin by holding the aqua mirror a few inches under the water and showing them their own reflection “look who can I see”… etc then demonstrate blowing bubbles and looking at yourself doing it…. You may want to use a fish ring over the top of the mirror to help direction, followed by much praise for trying ofcourse.
If a child is worried about placing eyes into water, combine use of goggles and looking into the mirror while bubbling. As children becomes more confident, place mirror on step or floor of pool and placing objects around the mirror to retrieve whilst looking at themselves.
The mirror is also very helpful with older children who may not want to keep their face down bubbling for very long. By asking them to bubble for as long as possible and look at themselves, most often this challenge is all they need. Place the mirror on the floor of the pool a few feet from the child and asking them to torpedo over the top of the mirror bubbling and looking for themselves. This helps to direct their attention to looking at the floor of the pool, this combined with streamlining will go a long way to giving them a better basis for working towards holding the proper position needed to achieve better strokes in freestyle, breast stroke etc.
Back Floating
Some children are very hesitant to float on their back as it makes them feel uncomfortable and out of control. By setting a child up in a back float and supporting them with one hand and holding the smaller hand held mirror above the child and showing them their reflection, this may help to alleviate some anxiety
